Monthly Legal Clinic Expands Access for Immigrants

Responding to the growing need for legal services for immigrants, De Novo together with the City of Cambridge’s Commission on Immigrant Rights and Citizenship (CIRC) launched a new monthly Immigration Legal Screening Clinic.

De Novo Immigration Supervisor Valerie Fisk supervises some 15 volunteer attorneys who provide multilingual legal consultations to clients, either by walk in or appointment. Following an initial consultation with an attorney, clients are referred to pro bono or private attorneys in the area to further assist with their legal needs. In its first nine months, 129 clients have received free legal assistance through the clinic.

“Our staff and volunteers collaborate with almost 50 different community organizations, and partnerships like this one with the City of Cambridge are essential to our ability to meet our clients’ needs,” said John Froio, De Novo Deputy Director.

The clinic is held on the third Wednesday evening of each month from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at De Novo offices, located at 47 Thorndike Street in Cambridge. Click here for a full list of 2019 clinic dates.
